The Prestige: a competition of magicians

The ACE of MAGIC - The Prestige: a competition of magicians
The Prestige: a competition of magicians
The Prestige is a great movie. It’s one of my favorite movies about magic. It shows the realistic world of the competition of magicians that exists behind the scenes of all stagecraft.

It is not my intention in this blog post to review a movie. Instead, the movie helps open the door to a larger point: what happens sometimes behind the scenes of magic.

Ever since I started practicing the art of magic my mind was crazy to find the best way to invent a magic trick and present a magic act. Not much has changed since that day.

Women in magic - Female Magicians

Women in magic - Female Magicians
Women are magical for many reasons, and among those reasons is that many of them are magicians!

For years it was common to see women in magic shows involved as the lovely assistant – appearing from boxes, dancing, being levitated or sawed in half. While the magician, a man, got the applause and the name atop the billing, the women were doing a big portion of the work.

What’s more, increasingly women are the magicians themselves.

Many years ago in my birth country of Colombia, I attended a Latin American congress of magic, and with great surprise saw for the first time a woman performing a stage show full of music and sleight of hand.

The wise way to watch “Penn & Teller: Fool Us”

Penn and Teller are an amazing “dynamic duo” in magic. As professional magicians and entertainers they have surprised and dazzled thousands of audiences through the years, becoming increasingly familiar in the field of magic and illusions. One of the most recent and popular TV magic shows is “Penn and Teller: Fool Us,” presented by Jonathan Ross. Wikipedia: Penn & Teller: Fool Us

The program has received a lot of great reviews and critiques(*). For me I think the program encourages magicians, it doesn’t matter the level, to come to present magic trick routines. The concept of the program is to do something to fool two expert magicians and entertainers, to be clever and smart enough that Penn and Teller can’t guess or figure out the secret.

Florida Magic Conventions

Florida full of magic 2015
Florida has long been considered a magical state, thanks to Disney World and the other theme parks around Orlando.

But more and more it looks like Florida is a hotbed for magicians, too.

In 2015, there will be two major international magic conventions held in the Sunshine State, plus the annual state magic convention in Daytona.

The International Brotherhood of Magicians (IBM) is holding its annual convention in Jacksonville in July, followed by the Genii Conjurors’ Convention in Orlando (Orlando magicians) the end of September and beginning of October. Capping off the year of Florida magic is the 16th annual Daytona Beach Festival of Magic, this year held the first week of November.
