Everybody makes a connection between a magician and a bunny or a dove pulled out of a hat. And people have expressions like: How Amazing! – How fun! – I want the magician with a rabbit / dove for my party!

But before you ask for such a trick, there are some things to keep in mind.

 

Behind the stage the rabbits and doves suffer!

I respect my colleagues who choose to work with rabbits, doves or animals, and I hope that they are doing their best to take care of the animals. But for me, as a magician, I do not work with rabbits because if I'm doing my best and the show is entertaining and the tricks outstanding, I don't need to resort to using a rabbit for people to remember my show. 

Sleight of hand: the reality is not what you think. 

Let me describe this situation before you decide to have a rabbit or even a dove at your party. The regular magic shows are 30 to 45 minutes long. Making the rabbit or dove appear at the beginning of the show is not going to work very well, unless you want the show to end quickly.

That means the rabbit / dove needs to be kept in a small box for anywhere from 15 to 40 minutes, with low oxygen and no light. 

The rabbit / dove can’t move, they can't jump or fly, they can’t be free, etc… All of this because at the end of the show, the rabbit / dove gets to be the "star" of the party and the children get to be amazed for about 30 seconds. 

Ok, let's make the rabbit appear -- wham! .. Oops. The rabbit is confused and dizzy, not only because of the things I just mentioned, but also because the magician shakes the box for the “magical effect.” (I say we all try it ourselves first to see how it feels.) After the rabbit appears, then what? The screaming and applause, of course, which is why the rabbit is there in the first place. 

The rabbit doesn't understand what's going on (as far as we know). But one thing we don't have to guess about is that the rabbit, at any moment, is going to be pooping and starting to smell bad. He's an animal, what do you expect? That the rabbit appears and says: "Sorry, guys, I pooped because I felt bad inside this tiny space, with no food, air or light. I hope you understand." Now that would be something! 

Are Rabbits / Doves / Animals OK for a Show? Smells and allergies 

Ok. Let’s assume that the rabbit and dove or any animal for the show are fine for some minutes and they are “trained” for many years to support this inhumane treatment because they are “animals." 

You have to think about the other people at the party and if they might be allergic to the rabbit - animal. "Hey, come to my party, and afterward, you'll have a great sinus infection!… OMG how fun!" 

Then if the rabbit is pooping and peeing, the magician can say, "Ok! Time for more fun! Time to clean the carpet and the floor." 

Then if you think that the guests are going to remember this party with a rabbit, dove or animal, you are right! And the memories will last for you, too -- along with the smell at your house for the next couple of days. 

These are just a few examples of situations with "magic bunnies - magic doves - magic birds - magic animals - etc."

Before you hire a magician with a rabbit - dove or any live animal, be sure to inquire about how the magician takes care of the rabbit, dove or any animal for the magic show, and be sure that they have some extra insurance to protect your investment. 

And if you are still worried, then don't have a rabbit at your party -- that is probably the best insurance for the rabbit.

Hiring a magician for a conventions, party or any special event has become popular. People hire magicians for special occasions as conventions, kid’s parties, festivals, schools, corporate events, libraries, adult parties, etc.

 

According with your event select the right magician for your event. But how to hire the right magician for your event?

When you decide to hire a magician, you need to ask yourself what you want from the magician for your party or event.

It is different to hire a magician for a kid’s birthday party than for a convention, corporate party, festival or a strolling cocktail party.

There are many services that entertainment companies offer for events, such as comedians, hypnotists, musicians, clowns, bounce houses, face painting, balloon makers, etc. (Depending of your event).

Every customer wants the best act or magic show for the event, and from my over 20 years of experience as a magician, every event is special and different.

 

How to decide to hire the right magician? 

There are many factors to consider before you hire a magician:

• The budget - the price & the service: How much do you want to spend hiring a magician for your event? Just because the magician asks a high price is not an indication that he or she is the best magician to hire for your event. But that is also true if the magician asks a very low price. However, the price can give an indication whether the magician works as an amateur or is a full-time professional magician. Then you can compare that to the budget you set for hiring a magician.
• Some magicians offer extra services to attract customers' attention. I would like to say that in my experience, offering a lot for a low price is a marketing trick. 
  In other words, a professional magician charges based on the quality of his or her tricks and the magic show. 
• Be sure that you hire the right magician for your type of event. Consider the style of the magic show that the magician is offering. There are many styles: 
• Comedy magic show. 
• Close up - dinner shows. 
• Magic with music. 
• Card tricks.
• Illusions.
• Kids magic shows. 
• Stage magic, etc.
• At the end! You don’t want a professional magician working 45 minutes with card tricks for a kids party where the children are 5 years old; or a comedy magic show with adult humor when your event is a family reunion with kids present; or a clown magician for an elegant corporate conventions or cocktail party.
• Local magicians: Hiring a local magician near to you helps to save money. If you are in an small city and there are not local magicians try a diferent cities. Magicians may travel to your city for an small extra fee. Compare prices with diferent magicians near to your city. 

Remember, your party is a special event, and you want something great for your guests. Your Event is Unique!

As a professional magician, I want to talk about my experience and what I think the customers need to consider in order to hire a professional magician for their event.

Hiring a magician for corporations, conventions and trade events.

For some corporations as trade events, dinner/lunch break, cocktail parties or a break for a conference, a close-up / strolling magic show or comedy magic are perfect. See if the magician can work with both small and large groups. 
The amount of time for the event is very important. For instance, perhaps you have a convention, and you need to hire a magician to entertain more than 100 people during a 30-minute break. Consider having the magician stroll through the crowd performing close-up magic, or perhaps stationing the magician at a table where the guests can pass by and watch his magic tricks. Also, you might want to consider hiring two or three magicians for this type of event to make sure that all the guests get to see a variety of close-up magic. If you have the option to have your guests at the same time, then a comedy magic show or illusion show are perfect to impress and relax the audience. By the way close-up magic is one of my favorite type of magic.

Hiring a magician for kid’s party: 

Working for kids is amazing! With all the technology available to kids today, it's not easy to impress them with a simple trick and a joke! A magician needs to know how to dazzle an audience of kids! And they are full of energy! To keep the kids' attention during a 45-minute magic show is a challenge for magicians. The magician needs to be more than a magician: the magician needs to be an entertainer, a positive, creative person, someone who can read an audience and think on his feet -- someone who can build up the kids' self-esteem after they help with the tricks, leaving the kids feeling good about themselves. Someone who loves what he is doing and is devoted 100 percent to the magic show!

 

Let’s put kid's parties into sub-categories: 

Kid's birthday party, schools, libraries and general kid’s party as Christmas, festivals, etc.

Hire a magician for a kid's birthday party.

• Age: To entertain the guests, consider the age of the children. Are the kids, including the birthday child, old enough to enjoy the show (usually, 4 years old and older)? 
• Kid's participation: If the birthday child is 4 years old or older, do you want a kid’s magic show where the birthday child is the star of the show? 
• Full of energy and tricks appropriate for the ages: Ask how the magician interacts with the kids and keeps the kid’s attention full time. 
• Parents: Even though the show is for the kids, ask if the parents will enjoy the show. They may enjoy watching the kids having fun during the show, and they also might get to participate.

Hiring a magician for a school magic show.

The way the magicians work for a school or summer camp magic show needs to be different. To hire a magician for a school or summer camp ask: 

• Number of kids: Can the magician handle many kids at the same time? 
• Professional: Is the magician able to provide proof of a background check, liability insurance, car insurance, and many other legal paperwork? 
• Educational: Are there tricks during the show that work as educational tools for the kids? 
• Interaction: How does the magician interact with the kids?

Hiring a magician for a General party like holidays or festivals 

The magic show needs to be fast-moving and interactive and needs to have the capacity to handle any situation, like the weather, audience, environment, place, number of people, etc. 

For example, if you hire a magician for a festival on the stage, and it starts to rain, the magician needs to be ready to jump to an alternative solution for the customer. That is why you are hiring a professional magician, to bring solutions for your event. The magician is an entertainer who can perform a magic show on stage, in a small setting or perform table by table with close-up magic.

 

Remember: To hire a magician for a kid’s party, you definitely need a magician who specializes in kid’s parties & events for kids.

 

Hiring a magician for an adult party - family party. 

There are fantastic magicians doing great shows for adult parties. But before you hire a magician, consider whether you will have an audience of all adults or if there will be children present; if you just want magic or if you'd like a combination of humor and a magic show. If you are hoping to hire a comedy magician for an adult party, that does not mean the magician needs to use swear words. But you want the humor to be fun for all age groups if there are some children present, too. 

References and reviews 

Since the customers aren't familiar with the magician's show and services, references from other customers can help with a decision about whether the magician is the best choice for the event. There are other factors that can make you feel more secure or confident upon making a decision to hire a magician. For instance: 
Experience: The magician's experience level and whether the magician works as a magician full time or part time.
Presentation or how the magician dresses for the shows.
Punctuality or having a policy to arrive early for set up time.
Weather policy, or how the magician handles rescheduling or refunds in the event of major rain storms, tornadoes or hurricanes. 
Other factors include whether the magician has a professional company that is registered with the state; how the magician interacts with customers when they call inquiring about a show; and proper invoices and paperwork.

Review Magic Shows & Magicians 

Each magician has his own style and probably, some people will like the style and other people won't. There are two groups who review a magician or magic show. 

The first: magicians reviewing the performance of other magicians. And second: the audience reviewing the performance of a magician. 

Some magician perform magic shows for magicians. Some other magicians work for general audience. In my case my magic shows are for the general audience. As a professional magician, I work hard, as I know some of my colleagues too,  to do the best magic show possible for the audience, whether it's a corporate event, theater or stage show, kid's birthday magic show, an adult's party magic show, school magic shows, library magic shows, convention, etc. Any event.

And after performing the magic show, I ask customers for reviews because for me, the audience has the last word about how I performed a magic show for their event. 

Reviewing the magic show - the magician - the magic act: 

For a magician to have reviews, the key is “EXPERIENCE.” It is not fair to create a false magic show review and list it on my website in order to attract customers to hire me, as unfortunately some magicians do. Even if I critique my own show, analyzing what is good and what didn't work, still, the job of the reviewer should belong to the audience. 

Fake Magic Shows Reviews

It is very difficult for me to review myself performing a magic show, except if I am shamelessly trying to promote my own business and trying to attract customers to hire me. And be careful! I have seen some web sites that review other magicians and I can easily see that those sites are creating false "reviews for other magicians". I like to be clear with my customers about what I offer in my shows. 

A Real Review about a Magic Show or Magician helps customers to make a decision. 

From my experience as a professional magician, people like to hear and read (in the reviews) the opinions from other people (See magician reviews) about services offered by the entertainer. 

The review is one more factor that helps people make a decision while planning a party or event when they don't personally know the entertainer or have never seen the show. 

Even though it's sometimes difficult to capture the entire experience of a magic show in a review, the customers can use it along with some other factors in making a decision about who they want to hire for an event. For instance, they can consider if the magician is an "amateur magician" or a "professional magician." At either level, they are both magicians. And at the end is the customer needs to decide who is the most appropriate entertainer magician for the party.

MY SPANISH ACCENT FOR KIDS PARTY MAGIC SHOWS

My first language is Spanish, since I am living in the United States I am learning English as a second language, it is not easy for me. Now I know a little more English than when I came here 7 years ago. I know that I have an accent when I speak English, and it seems like it works very good for the magic shows, after the magic show most people think that I speak English with an accent to make the show more funny (by the way my show is comedy magic).

I play a game with the kids telling words in English and Spanish, it is very funny. Sometimes in my magic shows, the kids try to speak Spanish with me like Buenos Dias Mr. Magician. When I go to the school to perform a magic show, the teachers like that I repeat some words in Spanish, so the kids can learn a couple words or just practice with me in Spanish. Everything seems like my accent works very well for my magic shows, but for the call phones, the accent doesn't work very well as it does for the magic shows. Most people don’t care about my accent over the phone and they just wait for me to do a great magic show at the party (see my reviews from the happy customers after the magic show).

When the people call me for information about a magic show or to book the show they can hear an accent and the questions begin - Do you think that the kids can understand you at the magic show because of your accent? -- Ooops. It's hard to answer because two things are coming to my mind. Number one I am sure that not only the kids can understand and will enjoy the show, but also the parents will understand and enjoy it as much as the kids! And number two, how do I convince the person so they will understand. I have a customer that asked the question about whether the kids could understand my accent at the show, I said: Yes it is different when I speak over the phone to when I am showing the tricks and speaking with the kids at the show. Then she said: I don’t think that the kids will understand. I said well I can’t do anything over the phone or say anything over the phone to show you how the kids will enjoy the show, the only way is to do it at your party, she was really nervous to hire me for the party, but after three calls she booked the show with me…

I was really nervous to do the party for her, because she seemed very picky about everything. But here is a new goal for me to show myself that I can do the party, even with my accent. I was there early (like always). About 40 kids were playing at the park, and I was preparing everything for the show. The mom called the kids to sit down and be ready for the magic show with Cesar Domico. I was starting to relax. The kids were making noises everywhere, then I started the show. I soon got their attention. Good start, let's go for more tricks… after 20 minutes the kids and parents were enjoying the show, but let's go, I have another 20 minutes… after 40 minutes the people were in a great mood. They were really happy and I was happy too, again, the power of belief in myself won over my thoughts and fears. After the party the mom was busy and I didn't have any reviews that day from her, but after 4 days they contacted me to say thank you and they gave permission to use them as a reference to my future customers.

Still I am nervous and worry about my accent, especially when the people call and ask me about my accent for the kids magic shows. But since I don’t have anything to show the truth over the phone, I just believe in myself, and even if some people don’t hire me because of my accent, still I am working to fix the accent and perform magic shows where the people want to improve the party!
