I wonder if the same thing has happened to you that happened to me.

My first introduction to magic was seeing a magician performing at a kid’s party. I can’t remember exactly what magic tricks he was doing, but what I recalled was that he was the center of everyone’s attention! Ha! As little boy, I told myself: I want to do that, I want to do the same as he is doing, and it looks easy. On the way home, sitting in my seat on the bus, I started walking a coin inside my fingers. Little by little, I began moving that coin between my hands, without knowing that was the introduction to the fantastic world of magic.

Still a little boy, I didn’t stop there. I wanted to know more! It took me months to find books about magic tricks. I walked through the downtown of my home city, Bogotá, Colombia, visiting every bookstore possible asking for books about magic, but with no success. Then I went to spend time at the main library, named Luis Angel Arango – and there, I was so happy to find books about magic!
That day I spent the whole day at the library making copies of those books, most of them from Spain and a few from Argentina. Arriving home with those book copies, I didn’t want to do anything else. I locked myself in my room and began reading those books. Some were about the history of magic, others about techniques, and others about card tricks.

 

The reality about easy magic tricks!

I was fascinated – but I also quickly became overwhelmed. Unlike what I first thought, this was not easy to do! Of course not! It took me months and months just to master a few "easy tricks with coins and cards". Every day I worked at it, again and again, making mistakes over and over. 

It took me a long time to really understand that magic is more than a simple and easy trick. 

It was the practicing techniques of magic with cards, coins, spoons, everyday objects that made me understand that to be a magician was not easy and there is not such thing about easy magic tricks. It meant not giving up! I continued to practice my tricks and read my magic books every day, even right through my years at the university – every afternoon after classes. (I miss those times). 

As I was practicing the hard techniques with cards and everyday objects, I realized that others tricks were more easy to do – those store-bought tricks that anyone can pull off. I started buying those, and then I realized that the hard part to do those tricks was the presentation! After you present an “easy trick” if you are lucky enough the audience responds with an applause. But most of the time what follows is silence, and an uncomfortable feeling inside that makes you quickly move on to another trick. But when I was presenting the hard complicated tricks – those that required more practice and time – I saw the audience become more engaged and amazed in the magic shows and events. Then I knew that all those years of practicing this difficult type of magic with card tricks and close-up magic had been worth it: the pay-off was the reaction from the audience. That paid for all the effort and time mastering techniques and learning concepts and magic history.

Now you see me - the movie

Now you see me – the magical movie about magicians, escapists and hypnotists.

As I was preparing to watch the movie “Now you see me - the movie,” I was expecting a so-so movie about magicians doing magic with the help of a lot of Hollywood special effects. But I was pleasantly surprised. The movie offered much more.
It drew me in from the beginning with its story. There were also a lot of realistic touches that reflect situations that magicians and hypnotists live today – including dealing with people who set out to embarrass magicians or ruin careers by making a mission of revealing their secrets and techniques.

What surprised me about this movie - Now you see me – without giving too much away – was the message at its heart: an attempt by a mysterious magician whose identity no one knows to resurrect respect for magic, all the while there being a connection to (and attempt to avenge) a late magician once disgraced. But to do all that he or she needs to convince a collection of performers (magician, escapist, street magician and hypnotist) that the magic is real, and the audience needs to believe in this once again. In the process, there’s a bit of Robin Hood social justice in redistributing wealth from some of the crooked bad guys to regular people in the audience.

Now You See Me - the movie:

The best part of all – more than any of the individual magic tricks and special-effects stunts throughout – was the overall sleight-of-hand played on you, the viewer, something you discover at the end of the movie.

But don’t watch too hard for clues, because, as the movie warns, “the closer you think you are, the less you'll actually see.”

Uri Geller & the Orange Spot.

Reinventing  yourself. It is magical!!!
Every day is a new day... for sure. But every day, are you new? 
Coming from a magic convention hosted by Genii’s magazine, I feel that I have learned something new. Not only techniques but also experiences that as a human being help me to grow and realize that every day I can reinvent myself.

When I was 18 years old, I was a student with 5 dollars in my pocket to buy a book about magic tricks. At that time in my country of Colombia, it was very difficult to find a book of magic tricks. I decided to go to “La Feria del Libro” – one of the largest international book fairs in Latin America and the world (at least that is what the advertising said).
There were books everywhere and about everything you can imagine. But after walking around for four hours, I didn’t find a single book about magic tricks. I was sad and about to leave the book fair. Giving it one last chance, I walked to one of the kiosks where they had books about “everything” – except, I discovered, magic tricks. 

But before I could leave, a seller told me that the only magic book they had was about metaphysics… ha! And this guy who bends spoons. “Maybe it is something you want to do,” he said. Well that guy who bends spoons called my attention and I got the book, the orange spot. No tricks!!! But I got some information about the magic of self-esteem, and how powerful your mind can be, if you prepare it and tend to it the right way with a positive attitude.
I want to say that this book with an “orange spot” and cassette impacted my life. With this book I emerged with a positive example of how to live my life. I started to practice most of the things that this book explained this book by Uri Geller. 

Reading Uri Geller's books inspired me.

Years later in 2012, in my house in Florida, as I was preparing to attend the recent Genii magic convention in Orlando, I felt ready to refresh my knowledge about magic after years of hard work and doing shows in many places. I hoped to learn more techniques, perfect the ones I had and buy some new tricks to add variety to my shows. But there was another big reason I wanted to attend – to see my

mentor and the master Magician – Juan Tamariz. 
For years I had been reading his books about his tremendous magic effects and techniques. Of course I was excited to see other magicians such as Eugene Burger, and more! I also heard that someone special would be there: Uri Geller. My mind immediately returned to that book from years ago. But mostly I was eager to see Juan Tamariz.

The convention started with amazing magicians, lectures and expositions. On the second morning of the convention, Friday, Oct. 5, they announced a presentation by Uri Geller. I was looking forward to it, remembering the impact his book had on me. But when he was on stage, Uri Geller didn’t perform a single trick – nor did he bend a spoon. Instead, he talked about his experiences. For me, it was the most incredible moment and highlight of the convention.
Word for word, I felt connected to what he was saying and the same concepts I had tried to adopt for my life, especially in my most difficult moments. At one point, Uri Geller yelled at all of us magicians in that conference auditorium: “Re-invent yourselves! Get out of here and go work hard for yourself to be different. People are tired with the same card tricks, coins, illusions, magicians dressing the same, magicians appearing rabbits… do something different, be authentic!” In that moment I started to applaud….all by myself because no one else did. I loved what he said – the same concepts in his book. It was and has been the philosophy of my life. But I needed to be reminded of it and to hear those words again from someone – and what a surprise I was hearing those words from Uri Geller, yes the famous and amazing Uri Geller!

After his lecture everybody went crazy asking him for a

picture and autograph. People with books, pictures, newspapers, etc. I needed to wait in line 25 minutes or more for his picture and autograph. For years I've known famous people in Colombia and here in the United States, and I never liked or felt the need to ask them for autographs or pictures. But with Uri Geller, I was so moved by his talk that I wanted not only a picture and autograph but also to express to him how much of a positive impact his book and his words made on my life. When I told him, he shook my hand and hugged me. Despite all the people trying to get his attention, he took the time to listen to me.
I truly believe that books or situations don’t change people. They have an impact on people’s lives – but the real change comes from the people themselves – to decide to make their lives better. If I am planning to go outside to play, and it starts to rain, the situation impacts me, but I am the one who decides if I’m going to stay inside complaining all day or if I’m going to find an alternative way to enjoy my day and be happy.

Nothing stops positive attitudes. Make an intention to impact the world in a positive way.

Re-invent yourself with something different, put magic in your life

Four years ago, I received one of the most beautiful gifts. It was an invitation from my wife, Saundra, a yoga instructor and journalist, to join the gym. I didn't want to, but she persuaded me with love and the guarantee that we were going to enjoy it. I decided to go, and since that time, the gym has had a major impact on my health – not only through losing weight, but also because now we eat better and healthy food. I didn't understand how important it was until someone convinced me of it, but I had to make the decision to do it for myself.
Besides the exercise at the gym, I can meet new people. Make an excuse to talk with the people and to listen to people. Learn a new hobby that involves other human beings.

Re-invent yourself every day. 

Do something to improve your life as a partner, boss, worker, professional, parent, son or daughter, spouse or friend. Re-invent yourself to be happy and accept yourself for what you are. Impact the world with your presence and with your acts. Be crazy and do something beautiful in your life now.

You decide to do miracles as a magician.
The only person who has the magic to have a better life is YOU.

Rabbits for magic shows

Everybody makes a connection between a magician and a bunny or a dove pulled out of a hat. And people have expressions like: How Amazing! – How fun! – I want the magician with a rabbit / dove for my party!

But before you ask for such a trick, there are some things to keep in mind.

 

Behind the stage the rabbits and doves suffer!

I respect my colleagues who choose to work with rabbits, doves or animals, and I hope that they are doing their best to take care of the animals. But for me, as a magician, I do not work with rabbits because if I'm doing my best and the show is entertaining and the tricks outstanding, I don't need to resort to using a rabbit for people to remember my show. 

Sleight of hand: the reality is not what you think. 

Let me describe this situation before you decide to have a rabbit or even a dove at your party. The regular magic shows are 30 to 45 minutes long. Making the rabbit or dove appear at the beginning of the show is not going to work very well, unless you want the show to end quickly.

That means the rabbit / dove needs to be kept in a small box for anywhere from 15 to 40 minutes, with low oxygen and no light. 

The rabbit / dove can’t move, they can't jump or fly, they can’t be free, etc… All of this because at the end of the show, the rabbit / dove gets to be the "star" of the party and the children get to be amazed for about 30 seconds. 

Ok, let's make the rabbit appear -- wham! .. Oops. The rabbit is confused and dizzy, not only because of the things I just mentioned, but also because the magician shakes the box for the “magical effect.” (I say we all try it ourselves first to see how it feels.) After the rabbit appears, then what? The screaming and applause, of course, which is why the rabbit is there in the first place. 

The rabbit doesn't understand what's going on (as far as we know). But one thing we don't have to guess about is that the rabbit, at any moment, is going to be pooping and starting to smell bad. He's an animal, what do you expect? That the rabbit appears and says: "Sorry, guys, I pooped because I felt bad inside this tiny space, with no food, air or light. I hope you understand." Now that would be something! 

Are Rabbits / Doves / Animals OK for a Show? Smells and allergies 

Ok. Let’s assume that the rabbit and dove or any animal for the show are fine for some minutes and they are “trained” for many years to support this inhumane treatment because they are “animals." 

You have to think about the other people at the party and if they might be allergic to the rabbit - animal. "Hey, come to my party, and afterward, you'll have a great sinus infection!… OMG how fun!" 

Then if the rabbit is pooping and peeing, the magician can say, "Ok! Time for more fun! Time to clean the carpet and the floor." 

Then if you think that the guests are going to remember this party with a rabbit, dove or animal, you are right! And the memories will last for you, too -- along with the smell at your house for the next couple of days. 

These are just a few examples of situations with "magic bunnies - magic doves - magic birds - magic animals - etc." 

Before hiring a magician with a rabbit or a dove...

Before you hire a magician with a rabbit - dove or any live animal, be sure to inquire about how the magician takes care of the rabbit, dove or any animal for the magic show, and be sure that they have some extra insurance to protect your investment. 

And if you are still worried, then don't have a rabbit at your party -- that is probably the best insurance for the rabbit.

Ever since I was a little boy, nothing could call my attention like magic! 
I opened my eyes to magic early on in those days when I was a kid.
Today I am here preparing magic shows, and it seems like nothing has changed.
I am as in love with magic today as I was many years ago.



Preparing for a magic show is not only about magic tricks. It’s also about preparing for anything that could happen at the magic show.
Since doing magic shows for 20 years, I’m still excited taking time to see tricks, repeating tricks again and again, keeping the routine in my mind, practice my timing and even some expressions. To be prepared for all of that is important. But on the date and at the time of the show, anything can happen. 
More or fewer people might arrive than expected - especially the summer events at the libraries. The location might change at the last minute. Guests are late. Then there’s the rain. This is why as a magician, I need to be prepared to be prepared. For anything. :-)
My reality, my here and now, shows me that my experience of 20 years doing magic will mean nothing if I am not prepared for the fact that anything can happen at the shows. A new show is a new experience and needs to be as special as shows before that moment. That’s why I enjoy what I do: magic, every day putting more effort into creating new routines, not only to surprise people, but also to surprise myself, and still be prepared to be prepared.

A holiday weekend full of kids parties!

The last weekend I did four magic shows, and they were great. Nice People and great parties!

Every time I try to predict if a party could be good or not, but it is very difficult. Each has different styles, different cultures and different ways to have a party.

Also, the weekend brought beautiful days with a lot of sun. Two of the parties were outdoors. I was really hot because I was wearing my red magic jacket. I needed to use it because I hold tricks in my pockets, and it is part of my look as a magician!

I needed to drive about two hours between the parties, which is a long time, but when I go to perform a magic show, I don’t care how many hours I need to drive. It is about my passion for magic. I love to anticipate how the people are going to react to my show at the party, and I also think about ways my show can improve the party. I enjoy performing magic shows at the party, but also I work hard to entertain the people, and I think that the big point in this profession is that the people will be happy at the party with the magic show. I am happy when the people feel happy at the party and enjoy the show. It’s a good way for people to relax and take a break from all the stress, to laugh and enjoy something different, to forget their routines and pressures of their jobs. That’s my goal with each show. I enjoy doing my magic for the people, bringing laughs of illusions!

I don’t have the words to explain how I feel when the people at the party can’t stop laughing, and when I see the kids smiling. They ask me how I do the tricks, or sometimes they try to explain the tricks to me. I feel happy when the kids and parents tell me stories about some memories in the past at other parties because I know that a good party can have a lasting effect with people. This is my medicine for the life: enjoy what I do! After a weekend like that, I feel happy and with energy to prepare the shows coming up the next few days. I need to drive a lot to Miami, Orlando, Sarasota and more cities! Wow, it’s a lot of miles that I need to drive, but I’m always thinking that at the end of the trip are kids and parents waiting to see something different and amazing in my magic show! I am working hard to bring them a show that will make everyone have a great time!
