When I have Mondays off between performing magic shows all over Florida, I always try to do something to relax, like watch movies, or have a beer at the beach, walk in Downtown Disney, see comedy shows or magic shows -- and in Kissimmee the Wizardz Magic Theater is one of the great options for live entertainment on Mondays! The live magic shows are performed in a small, 50-seat theater, making it an intimate, interactive experience for audience members. Up close and personal entertainment doesn’t quite do Wizardz Magic Theater shows justice as a comprehensive description – these shows are more than just interactive, they involve audience participation every step of the way as you help the magicians complete their tricks and participate in their illusions and games. Magic with cards and Close-Up Magic: Are they easy magic tricks?

I wonder if the same thing has happened to you that happened to me.

My first introduction to magic was seeing a magician performing at a kid’s party. I can’t remember exactly what magic tricks he was doing, but what I recalled was that he was the center of everyone’s attention! Ha! As little boy, I told myself: I want to do that, I want to do the same as he is doing, and it looks easy. On the way home, sitting in my seat on the bus, I started walking a coin inside my fingers. Little by little, I began moving that coin between my hands, without knowing that was the introduction to the fantastic world of magic.

Still a little boy, I didn’t stop there. I wanted to know more! It took me months to find books about magic tricks. I walked through the downtown of my home city, Bogotá, Colombia, visiting every bookstore possible asking for books about magic, but with no success. Then I went to spend time at the main library, named Luis Angel Arango – and there, I was so happy to find books about magic!
That day I spent the whole day at the library making copies of those books, most of them from Spain and a few from Argentina. Arriving home with those book copies, I didn’t want to do anything else. I locked myself in my room and began reading those books. Some were about the history of magic, others about techniques, and others about card tricks.

 

The reality about easy magic tricks!

I was fascinated – but I also quickly became overwhelmed. Unlike what I first thought, this was not easy to do! Of course not! It took me months and months just to master a few "easy tricks with coins and cards". Every day I worked at it, again and again, making mistakes over and over. 

It took me a long time to really understand that magic is more than a simple and easy trick. 

It was the practicing techniques of magic with cards, coins, spoons, everyday objects that made me understand that to be a magician was not easy and there is not such thing about easy magic tricks. It meant not giving up! I continued to practice my tricks and read my magic books every day, even right through my years at the university – every afternoon after classes. (I miss those times). 

As I was practicing the hard techniques with cards and everyday objects, I realized that others tricks were more easy to do – those store-bought tricks that anyone can pull off. I started buying those, and then I realized that the hard part to do those tricks was the presentation! After you present an “easy trick” if you are lucky enough the audience responds with an applause. But most of the time what follows is silence, and an uncomfortable feeling inside that makes you quickly move on to another trick. But when I was presenting the hard complicated tricks – those that required more practice and time – I saw the audience become more engaged and amazed in the magic shows and events. Then I knew that all those years of practicing this difficult type of magic with card tricks and close-up magic had been worth it: the pay-off was the reaction from the audience. That paid for all the effort and time mastering techniques and learning concepts and magic history.

Card tricks and close-up magic are not easy to do!

From the perspective of the magic world, when it comes to card tricks and close-up magic, there is a big difference between a professional magician and someone doing tricks as a hobby. A professional magician is a passionate performer and actor who spends years of devotion mastering difficult techniques – delivering a well elaborated routine with cards and general objects – and making it all look easy.

But why does this news have national or even international attention? 

Is this really about the revelation of a magic trick? 

Has anyone taken a look at YouTube for the last ten years? Or videos on Facebook?

If not, just do a simple internet search with the words “magic tricks revealed,” or even “David Copperfield magic tricks revealed.”

There are hundreds of these types of videos out there! They show how magic tricks and illusions are done – everything from tricks with coins, cards, doves and rabbits to escapism, levitation, and illusions on making an elephant disappear. The list goes on and on.

At issue in this news item is that the world’s most famous magician must reveal a trick in court because he is being sued by a person who claims he was injured during a magic act in Copperfield’s show. 

The sleight of hand:

First, we don’t know what happened. All sorts of theories are circulating. Were the proper safety regulations in place in the theater? Was the person really injured or is he merely trying to take advantage of a famous magician for money? Is the whole thing a publicity stunt? Again, we don’t know and it is all for a judge to sort out.

But for me as a professional magician, this case illustrates a far bigger point about our industry: we are not just magicians and entertainers. We are business people. We magicians need to take care about our shows in every aspect, including the business side. We are not exempt of any unfortunate situation when we are on the stage, so what was alleged to have happened with David Copperfield could happen to any of us.

Magic is a business

When customers call to hire a magician, there are many things that go into that answer beyond the length of time of the act. Every magic show is created to entertain the audience. As artists we are clear on that. But we also need to take our time to think about what type of magic tricks or illusions we present, what is appropriate for the event and also for the age group. 

There is a lot of marketing and other expenses like liability insurance involved behind the scenes and a lot of careful planning about what tricks to buy or create, how to stay innovative but also responsible. We not only want to deliver a great magic show, but we also have to be sure to avoid accidents and to keep the audience safe. 

And I am not just talking about magic tricks that can hurt someone physically, but also psychologically. 

There are magicians doing illusions in schools that involve knives and nails and other scary effects. (Really?) Kids are like sponges; they absorb everything that they see and then they try to do it. Think for a moment about your magic act and where that magic show act is going to be delivered as well as how you are going to deliver it.

A professional magician is not only someone who can perform a trick well, but is an entertainer who knows his audience. 

For me, this is the greatest magic trick that a professional magician will always reveal: the passion for your art as well as the respect for your audience.

I don’t believe in magic!

Do you believe in magic? Is magic real or is magic just a trick?

During the 35 years of my career as a magician, I often have had the experience of someone from the audience come up to me before or after the show to say: "I don't believe in magic." My response to them is always the same: "Good, that makes two of us!" Some will turn to me and ask, "If you don’t believe in magic, why are you a magician?"

The reason is simple. According with Wikipedia we have two types of magic: magic (paranormal) the use of paranormal methods to manipulate natural forces and magic (Illusions) the art of appearing to perform supernatural feats. 

I understand that for some people the word magic can appear as something mysterious (paranormal) -- something they are afraid of. For others, magic doesn’t exist at all because magic is a manipulation of the reality and they call it a trick. 

We magicians have a different idea about magic. 

We use the concept of magic like we own the word. For many of us (magicians) the magic is art. It may include the study of acting, music, mathematics, body expression, lights, engineering, etc. 

I don't believe in magic, the song says. If we talk about the classic concept of magic, the dark one, as opposed to the philosophical perspective, we can see that the ones who really don’t believe in magic are the magicians. 

Again you might say, What? Why?! Because magicians create illusions to show the people something impossible, but in the end anyone who commits themselves with dedicated practice and study can reach the goal of doing illusions and presenting them as magic. 

Anybody can learn how to do a trick. But it is only when you learn how to combine magic as mystery, and magic as art that you become a magician, a professional magician. As a true magician, you do more than perform tricks: you create an atmosphere of entertainment.

Sometimes people from the audience who say they don't believe in magic are just trying to give the magician a hard time. Or they connect magic to a metaphysical belief. Really they need to re-consider the concept and relate the word MAGIC with entertainment.

Let me correct this: For me, Yes - I really believe in magic 

But not the common understanding of magic. Instead, I believe in the magic and power of entertainment, the magic of love, the magic of peace and the magic to reach your goals in life. But that type of magic is not possible just by moving a magic wand. They are concepts but they become real when we work for them. Then we will understand that magic is more than an illusion; magic is something that each of us can do if we truly believe in what we want and we believe in ourselves. 

The trick is how you develop and approach that goal in your life

Magicians are dream makers -- and that is what you need to start the process: a dream. DREAM OF SOMETHING, DREAM OF WHAT YOU WANT, and DREAM ABOUT YOUR PASSION IN LIFE! After that we need a plan, then we need education, then we need action, then we need to learn from mistakes, correct the errors and perfect them in order to move forward for that dream. 

The Magicians believe in art - the real magic!

The magicians you see doing a trick probably don't believe in that dark concept of magic. But those magicians believe that the trick can be done and that they can make it very magical in front of your eyes. They believe in the magic as an art, in themselves and trying to perfect that trick through hard work and constantly learning how to bring to the audience the best act, delivered with love and passion. Then if the magicians are able to surprise and entertain, the audience's applause could be the return of the happiness that the magician – the performer – the actor - the human being, has given to them. It is this connection that we call the real magic. And in that magic we most certainly believe.

Learning Comedy Hypnosis Stage Shows.

It is very common to see a comedy hypnosis stage shows in Las Vegas, a magical city where you can find many great types of entertainment shows. 

More and more we’re seeing advertisements for hypnosis shows in local cities and towns throughout the country. It seems like there is a craze for hypnosis shows. 

Some of that might have to do with the growth in hypnosis training programs that promise to make you a stage hypnotist in three to five days. Hypnosis Stage Shows.

Is hypnosis real or not? 

The question remains about whether hypnosis shows are real or not. It raises good questions about the practice of hypnosis and if anyone can be hypnotized – or be a hypnotist. 

As a professional hypnotist at the clinical level I need to say yes, the hypnosis on stage shows is sometimes real. It really works IF and only IF the hypnotist or entertainer has enough preparation to be on stage. It means as a professional hypnotist he or she needs to have a deep knowledge about hypnosis and the ethics to work as a hypnotist and or hypnotherapist on stage. Also the professional on the stage shows needs to have experience in other studies, such as acting, audience management and speaking, to name a few. 

The hypnotist control minds!

Still, many people are skeptical about hypnosis, believing that the hypnotist will control their minds. They think that hypnosis is a dark force or that they are going to end up doing something that they don’t want to do. 

Movies play a big role in the misconceptions about hypnosis. Take sharks for example. Are you afraid of getting eaten by sharks? Do you believe that sharks deliberately attack people? You can thank movies for that fear and misconception – because shark attacks are extremely rare: the number of people who drown every year in the United States is over 3,300. The number of annual shark fatalities is one. Those attacks that do occur are usually either provoked by humans or the result of mistaken identity: in other words, the shark thinks you’re a fish... ops, it was the shark's mistake. 

Misconceptions about hypnosis are just as common. 

After going through in-depth training over hundreds of hours and many months to become a hypnotist at the clinical level and also performing with it on stage shows, I discovered that the practice of hypnosis is much deeper than the stereotypes or concepts that exist about it. It is not a game, and no one controls your mind when you agree to be hypnotized. It is a serious treatment only possible with full participation and willingness of the client and/or audience, and it is used by hypnotherapists to help people through deep emotional issues and to develop new coping mechanisms through various difficult situations in life. 

Hipnosis stage shows. Training classes in three days! 

What calls my attention are the number of “hypnosis courses” that are advertised on the Internet and through different media – offering to teach you how to be a hypnotist to do a hypnosis stage show in a few lessons through a few manuals and – at most – three to five days of classes. They guarantee you that you’ll make thousands of dollars performing comedy hypnosis shows on stage and selling your shows to corporate events, clubs, conventions. All for only several hundred dollars! And there’s more! For several additional thousand dollars, you can be a hypnotherapist, they tell you, helping people to quit smoking, to sleep better and lose weight. 

If you pay and attend the live classes, you can do everything, from being a hypnotist, to setting up your own show / business and do the marketing to make a lot of money. Now read carefully the advertising before you pay for your hypnosis training classes. The advertisement says, “They teach you and provide the materials.” What they don’t say is how they are going to teach you how to use these skills and how long you need to study or practice those skills to be a professional. 

It sounds good very good and difficult to believe. Because it is difficult to believe. And possibly these sort of advertisements and get-rich-quick hypnosis courses have also undermined the professionalism of hypnosis in the eyes of the public. 

Training Hypnosis Stage Shows - The reality is different. 

Like any profession, including with magic and hypnosis, a lot of training is involved. It is not in three days, it takes years of education, training and practice. 

As both a professional magician and hypnotherapist at the clinical level, I have a university-level background in philosophy, marketing, theater, communications and months of certified training in hypnosis at a program overseen by the Florida Department of Education. Add to that, years of practice and experience. 

And like anyone in any profession, I always feel I need to keep learning more. 

Professional hypnotist.

The people who are marketing those hypnosis classes and courses promising to teach the “secrets of hypnosis” in a short time are not helping the practice of hypnosis reach a professional level of respect.

It’s one of my favorite movies about magicians. 

It shows the realistic world of the competition of magicians that exists behind the scenes of all stagecraft.

It is not my intention in this blog post to review a movie about magicians. Instead, the movie helps open the door to a larger point: what happens sometimes behind the scenes of magic.
Ever since I started practicing the art of magic my mind was crazy to find the best way to invent a magic trick and present a magic act. Not much has changed since that day. 

Every human being working toward prestige in their profession needs to pass through steps. They study and practice toward acquiring knowledge of an art or profession. With this knowledge, they work toward not just perfection of the art or profession but a way they can practice it that is different and unique. 

Are magicians competing to be the best in magic arts or simply for prestige and their own egos?

The movie: The prestige shows the competition as an obsesion. Competition is good. There’s nothing wrong with competing. Actually competition is one of the ways that magic clubs let the magicians show their skills, inventions and talents on stage. But sometimes in the field of competition the evaluation of our expectations needs to be reevaluated. Having a spirit of competition in the right way can encourage self-esteem and creativity at any level for people in any profession. 

The dark side of our ego: But the movie Prestige shows how magicians can enter competition for the sake of prestige, and in the process, they lose the joy of the art. And here is my point today. When we involve our egos in the wrong way looking more for the fame and name recognition, we lose our north. We stop enjoying what we do for the love of it. This is true of people in any profession of any age. 

I am no stranger to this magician's competition.

In my 20s, I was focusing all the time to learn and perform magic and the best tricks. Like any other human being, I felt feelings of competition. Sometimes other magicians cut me out of opportunities and the tight circle they created. Like other young magicians, I tried to outdo my peers.

 

But more recently I’ve noticed a different side to the profession. When I moved to Tampa, I heard about the Tampa Bay Magic Club. I figured I didn’t need it. What do I need with a club?

But I started to attend the monthly meetings. Most of the magicians were much older than me, in their 60s, 70s and 80s. They are from a generation when magicians toured the circuit, traveling the country in RVs and campers, booking shows in cabaret rooms and state fairs when live entertainment shows were a popular thing. They had colorful stories and interesting names – like Windy and Sunny. Even more colorful were their personalities. They performed magic tricks at the club meetings and made mistakes, but would keep right on going. They encouraged each other. What mattered was the magic, not their egos. 

They brought in speakers and organized fundraisers, but more than that, whenever one of the members had a show, they’d get the word out so everyone would go to support them. At more than one of my own shows, I’d see their faces in the audience, whether or not I had been making the monthly club meetings on a regular basis. Recently, the spouses of several members have died. All of the club members spread the news and rallied around their friends, attending the funerals. Sometimes sitting in a group, sometimes spread out in different places in the pews at the funeral service. Always letting their club member and friend know they were there, to bring food, for companionship, to take them to a show. 

They taught me something, a new way of being a magician and the concept for competition.

To be humble and to listen in order to learn, instead of being so quick to make myself heard and seen. To be supportive and gracious, because there is enough magic and wonder out there for everyone.

Through their example, I learned that there is much more to the magic world than the prestige we younger magicians tend to seek. The older magicians have taught me the real meaning of brotherhood in the brotherhood of magicians.
